LSVT® and Virtual Therapy as an Aid in Speech Treatment
for Parkinson disease

We are looking for 24 individuals with idiopathic Parkinson's Disease (age range 45-85) to take part in a study designed to look at using computer technology to administer speech therapy.

The LSVT® is an intensive therapy for Parkinson's disease which focuses on voice. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the use of a computerized animated speech therapist (virtual therapist) in combination with LSVT®. The virtual therapist is programmed to guide individuals through the LSVT® therapy on their own.

The National Center for Voice and Speech (NCVS) in Denver, Colorado is looking for individuals, between the ages of 45-85, who will be age and gender matched to individuals with Parkinson disease (PD).

The purpose of the research study is to determine the effects of two different kinds of speech treatment on individuals with PD. This study will help the research team understand which kinds of speech treatment are the most beneficial for individuals with PD and how treatment can affect other areas of behavior including speech, voice, swallowing, related communication behaviors and body movement. In order to obtain valid study results, the team needs to compare these various areas of function in individuals with PD to healthy individuals of close to the same age, without Parkinson disease.

If you are selected and choose to take part in this study, your participation is voluntary. Compensation will be provided for your participation. All assessments will be provided at no cost to you. This study is research.
